We all have yeast in our body and that it is quite normal. However, some people have too much yeast in the body and this can make you feel exhausted. Too much yeast causes inflammation within the body and some people are allergic to yeast and may not even know it.
If you are not sure if you have a yeast overgrowth issue, there is a simple at home test that you can take, to see if you have too much yeast in your body.
The “Saliva Test” is very simple to do. Before going to bed at night, fill a clear glass with water and place it at your bedside. When you wake in the morning, before you do anything else, simply work up a bit of saliva and spit into the glass of water. It is said to be important that nothing enters your mouth or touches your lips before you do this. Sources recommending the test instruct us not to drink any water, brush our teeth or even kiss your partner. Look at how the saliva looks and then check again 2-3 times every 15 minutes.
Steps you need to take to do the test:
- Fill a glass of water (250mls) within 30 minutes of waking up. Before eating/drinking or cleaning teeth.
- Spit your saliva into the glass of water
- Note salvia appearance. Allow the “spit” to sit for 15 minutes. Check the water every 15 minutes or so for up to one hour.

Interpreting What You See;
Healthy saliva will be clear and float on top of the water. It will then begin to slowly dissolve into the water without any cloudiness and without sinking. There would normally be some bubbles or foam present.
If the test is suggestive of ‘Yeast’ overgrowth then some or all of the following signs will be present;
- Strings traveling down to the bottom of the glass
- Cloudy saliva that sinks to the bottom of the glass
- Cloudy specks suspended in the water
It is suggested that the more strings and cloudiness there are, and the faster this develops, the greater the ‘Yeast’ overgrowth.
Causes of Yeast Overgrowth;
Antibiotics and poor diet are the main causes of yeast overgrowth in the body, when people take antibiotics it not only kills the bad bacteria if you have an infection, it also kills the good bacteria. This can provide an environment for yeast to grow and thrive.
Poor diet is also another big factor that can cause yeast overgrown. Diets that are high in sugar, carbohydrates, processed foods/acidic foods, and alcohol are big contributors.
Yeast overgrowth begins in the colon. Over time, as the fungal yeast multiplies it begins to migrate through the digestive tract, moving up into the small intestine, then the stomach (bloating, indigestion), up the oesophagus and into the mouth. If it becomes strongly entrenched there you can see a white film on your tongue and inside your cheeks. Once it has moved up to the mouth and you spit into a glass of water the yeast will sink because it is heavier than water. If there is no yeast it will float on top.
Remove all yeast feeding acidic substances which yeast, bacteria and fungus feed on; bread, sugar, vinegar, grains, fruit and oestrogen imbalances (plastics, micro-waves, meat-hormones, household cleansing products and washing powder, * check chemical sheet).
